The story begins with the events described in Resident Evil 0 set in 1998. It was during that time period, that S.T.A.R.S. captain, Albert Wesker first sought an opportunity to set into motion a traitorous conspiracy.

His plan involved placing on the line the lives of all the members from his unit: Alpha Team. The same plan would also compromise his loyalty to the corporation he swore to obey.

Wesker's machinations were designed to gain power at all costs. And what finally motivated him to want to take such drastic action, was his failure to reclaim the Umbrella Training Facility from Dr. James Marcus. The former head of the Training Facility, had come back from the dead to take revenge on Umbrella.

The resurrection of Dr. Marcus and the viral outbreak he helped unleash shortly after, had completely taken the corporation by surprise. Wesker had considered that such a bizarre occurrence was an ideal opportunity to implement his plan.

Leaving everything behind, he immediately takes route toward the Arklay Mansion, where he hopes to launch the next phase of his sinister plan. And yet getting out alive from the Facility becomes quite a challenge to him. The place was entirely populated by infected creatures of all sorts.

Things turn for the worse, when he meets up with Sergei Vladimir, the head of Umbrella's armed forces. Vladimir had been sent to "punish" Wesker for his failure to recuperate the Training Facility.

Wesker manages to escape with his life and goes on to fulfill his mission in leading the S.T.A.R.S. unit to the mansion. Where they were to be employed as Bio-Weapon test subjects.

However, Wesker had underestimated the survival skills of his unit. They all fought for their lives with extraordinary resolve. Only a few of them had any success in staying alive. Together they brought down the plans of their former captain. And they eventually went on to expose Umbrella's crimes to the world.

But evil was not vanquished. Wesker had gained powers beyond the capacity of any normal human being and Umbrella had continued to flourish in the underworld. The first, had been working in the shadows for many years and went mostly unnoticed. That wasn't exactly the case with Umbrella. Despite the corporation's efforts to remain under the radar, the ex-members of S.T.A.R.S. and the anti-Umbrella agency had caught up with the corporation and had joined forces with the hope of destroying it once and for all.

So it was that in 2003, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine are again lured by Wesker to an Umbrella facility, where a new dangerous Bio-Weapon was under development. It is there, that an epic battle is to take place... and it all happens in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.
